Disclosure: I may earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you.

You have a script, a newsletter issue, a course lesson or a video, and you want it to sound like a person recorded it. A voice actor costs days and money. Recording yourself costs an evening, plus retakes.

This ElevenLabs review answers the question that matters before you pay: how many minutes of audio does each plan actually give you, and does the quality justify the price?

I went through the official pricing page, the latest model release, the refund terms and what real buyers report, complaints included.

Quick verdict

  • Best for: solo creators, newsletter writers, course builders, faceless video channels, podcasters and audiobook authors who want a pro voice without a studio.

  • Skip it if: you need many hours of audio on a tight budget, you need software you host yourself, or you plan to publish audio without listening to it first.

  • Price: a Free plan with 10,000 credits a month, and paid plans that start at $6 a month.

  • My pick: start on Free, then move to Creator ($22 a month) once you publish audio every week.

What ElevenLabs is, in plain words

You paste text, pick a voice, press generate and download audio that sounds human. That is the core of it. Around that core sit voice cloning, dubbing into other languages, sound effects, music, image and video tools, plus a separate platform for businesses that build voice agents.

The homepage lists a library of more than 17,500 voices in over 90 languages. For most people reading this page, only the creative side matters: speech, cloning, dubbing, music and sound effects.

ElevenLabs mobile app showing voices and generated speech

The ElevenLabs app puts your voices on your phone.

The newest model is Eleven v4. ElevenLabs says it ranks first on the Artificial Analysis voice leaderboard and that about 75% of listeners preferred it over competing models in its own blind tests. Treat those numbers as the company's own testing. What you can verify yourself is on the free plan: type a line, add a tag such as [whispers] or [laughs], and listen.

What you get, and what it does for you

Text to speech. Turn a newsletter issue, a blog post or a course lesson into audio. You steer delivery with plain-language direction and inline tags, so a line can sound urgent, warm or playful. The payoff: an audio version of your writing without booking a microphone.

Studio and API. Studio holds long projects, with 3 on Free and 20 on Starter. The API lets developers wire voices into their own apps.

ElevenLabs Studio editor with a podcast script and voice settings panel

Studio is where long scripts and voice settings live.

Voice Design. Describe the voice you want in plain words, add a line to preview, and generate. The payoff: a character, narrator or brand voice you cannot find in the library.

ElevenLabs Voice Design prompt describing a croaky witch voice with a preview line

A character voice, described in one sentence.

ElevenLabs Voice Design description of a whispery French-accented voice with a preview line

Accent and mood go in the description.

Voice cloning. Instant Voice Cloning arrives on the $6 Starter plan, and Professional Voice Cloning starts on Creator. With v4, ElevenLabs says an instant clone can capture a voice from about 10 seconds of audio. The payoff: your own voice on every video and lesson, recorded once. Clone your own voice, or one you have permission to use.

Dubbing. Dubbing Studio comes with Starter and above. The payoff: one video, many languages, same voice identity.

Music and sound effects. Generate tracks and sound effects from a text prompt. Commercial use of music starts on Starter.

If a narrated version of your own writing sounds like the next step for your brand, this is the cheapest place to find out.

The credit math most reviews skip

Plans are sold in credits. About 1,000 credits buy one minute of speech. The pricing page translates each plan into minutes, which is the number you should shop by.

Here is how that plays out:

  • A 5-minute audio edition of a weekly newsletter is about 20 minutes a month. Starter covers it.

  • A 3-minute voiceover for a daily video is about 90 minutes a month. Creator covers it.

  • A 10-minute daily episode is about 300 minutes a month. That is Pro territory.

Leave a margin. Previews, failed generations and regenerated lines all burn credits, not only the take you keep. A script you rewrite three times costs four times the minutes.

A simple first week

You do not need to commit to anything to find out if this fits. Try this order:

  1. Day one: create a free account, paste a paragraph you have already published, and listen to it in three different voices. Pick the one that sounds like your brand.

  2. Day two: add direction to the same paragraph. Try a tag like [whispers] on one line and a calmer pace on another. This is where v4 earns its reputation, so spend your time here.

  3. Day three: generate one complete piece, such as a 3-minute video script or one newsletter issue. The free plan's roughly 10 minutes covers it with room for a retake.

  4. Day four: count the minutes you would need each month, match them to the table above, and pick a plan. Or stay free if the numbers say so.

By the end of the week you will know your voice, your monthly minutes and your plan, and you will have spent nothing.

Who should buy it, and who should skip it

It fits you if:

  • You publish audio or video on a schedule and want a consistent voice.

  • You write a lot and want an audio edition of your own work.

  • You want to test voices for free before spending anything.

  • You sell courses or digital products and want narration without a studio.

Skip it if:

  • You generate many hours of audio and cost per character is your main metric.

  • You need to host the software on your own servers.

  • You publish with no listening pass. Expressive models can sound convincing and still need review, and multilingual work benefits from a native speaker's check.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • G2 reviewers highlight ease of use and speed, and Capterra shows a 4.7 rating.

  • One account covers speech, cloning, dubbing, music and sound effects.

  • A free plan that lets you hear results before paying.

  • A very large voice library, and v4 handles over 90 languages.

Cons

  • Credits go fast. G2 reviewers call the credit limits restrictive, and retakes count against you.

  • Billing complaints exist. Trustpilot shows a 3.2 score, with buyers reporting trouble with renewals, canceling, and lost credits after a downgrade.

  • The refund window is narrow (more below).

  • Output still needs a listen before it goes public.

Pricing, refunds and what happens after you click

When you click through, you land on the ElevenLabs site and create an account. The Free plan gives you 10,000 credits a month. You upgrade from the subscription page when you are ready. Commercial use of your audio begins with the Starter plan.

Refunds follow a specific rule: you are eligible if you ask within 14 days of payment and used none of the credit quota in that period. Email [email protected] from your account address. Outside that window, ElevenLabs does not refund mid-cycle cancellations, and unused credits are forfeited on cancel.

Two habits protect you. First, test everything on Free so you never need a refund. Second, spend your credits before you downgrade or cancel, since buyers report losing them.

Three objections, answered

"Is it worth the money?" Start at $0. If you publish audio even once a week, Starter at $6 includes the commercial license, and Creator lists a 50% discount on the first month. Spread over a month of weekly audio, Starter works out to about $1.50 per episode.

"Will it sound robotic?" v4 was built to interpret tone, pacing and emotion, and you can direct delivery with tags. Listen to your own script on Free, which takes minutes. If it does not sound right to you, you have spent nothing.

"Is it hard to learn?" G2 users highlight ease of use, and Capterra shows a 4.7 rating from 18 verified reviews. The workflow is paste, pick, generate.

How to decide

Say yes to ElevenLabs if most of these are true:

  • You will publish audio or narrated video in the next 30 days.

  • Your monthly minutes fit a plan in the table above.

  • You are fine listening to a draft before you publish.

  • You want one tool for voice, cloning and dubbing.

Say no for now if you need self-hosting or the lowest possible cost at high volume.

Final verdict

If you make content for a living or want to, ElevenLabs is the voice tool I would start with. Reviewers keep pointing to its natural sound, it covers cloning and dubbing under one roof, and the free plan lets you judge the sound before you pay anyone. Budget your credits using the minutes table, listen before you publish, and spend your credits before you change plans.

P.S. The fastest way to know if this fits is to paste one paragraph you have already written into the free plan and press generate. It takes a few minutes and costs nothing. Try it here.
